Don, or Grandpa Shiles as he was known to me, was one of the most amazing people I have had the privilege to have in my life. Grandpa and his family taught me as a young child that family was beyond blood; Sometimes people are family by choice. I will never forget the last few years that I had to go to ballgames with him and then finish the day off with hotdogs and Slurpees. One of the things I remember most are the endless stories he had and I wish I had written them down because they would have made a great novel. I will truly miss him and I am glad I had the time with him that I did. I only wish I'd had a bit more.

My favorite memory of Grandpa Shiles was when we lived in Germany and would take the Duty Train to come and see you. Grandma and Grandpa would take us bowling and give us treats and little toys to play with. He was always so kind and loving. He was a gifted soldier, loving father, and grandfather even to his adopted grandkids like me. I cherish my memories of growing up with him. Love you forever Grandpa Shiles. Till we meet again.

My father was a wonderful man with more talent and strength than anyone I've known. He accomplished so much in his life and still made time to be with the people he loved. I was blessed to have him in my life and I will always be grateful for his example.
