I so enjoyed the stories, the conversations, and the laughter at our writing group meetings. So fortunate to have met such an interesting man and getting to hear about his experiences first hand. What treat it was. What a great life. My deepest sympathy to the family.
I am grateful to have known Don, and to have learned from him. He was a very wise and kind soul. My sincerest condolences to his family and all that suffer his passing.
Don was an honorable man who always went above and beyond for the folks he worked with and the students he taught. He's a legend in his field and his legacy will live on for decades if not longer. Travels will keep me from attending his memorial. Instead, I send many wonderful memories of Don to the entire Shiles family. God bless.
Don was a rare creature - talented, creative, humorous, brave, moral, a good friend and an able teacher. He is missed.
I met him through his daughter Becky, when we were in Germany. I had just recently Joined the LDS Church and Becky and I became good friends. On occasion I would spend the night at their house and He was always friendly and kind. They all made me feel like I was part of the family. I have such great memories of my time spent with them!!
My father gave his all and did his best at everything he did. He loved his family and loved his country. What more can you ask of any man?

Don was always smiling and had a kind word to say to each person he encountered. I was so thankful for his loving and patient way of teaching.

He was a very knowledgeable and interesting person to know. Enjoyed working with him on the board of the IAIL as well as having him as an instructor. He will be missed.

I will dearly miss Don. He was a wonderful instructor, and very knowledgeable. May he rest in peace.
My children knew him as Grandpa...for me he was a loveable big brother. I will never forget his ever-present grin and example of love and devotion to his sweetheart-for-life. Till we meet again dear friend...
I never knew him except through Becky and she always was so proud of him, I knew he had to be a really cool man .... as his story confirms. He loved his 4-legged kids so much too, which says a lot. Becky and Gaylie will miss him so much but his memory and the stories will always be fresh. I believe he was truly a godly man, father and husband.
Just one of the many students who passed through and learned much under Don's tutelage, I will never forget the wisdom, patience and friendship that Don delivered day in and day out. It was truly an honor to know and learn from a humble hero such as Don. My thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time. God Bless and God Speed, Don.
Mr. Shiles was my instructor 7 years ago. His wealth of knowledge and experience helped set the foundation on where my career is today. He certainly loved his country and reminded me of an era that will always be remembered for heart, discipline, and dedication to duty. My thoughts and prayers go out to all of his family and friends. Semper Fidelis.
Don was a mentor and friend to many. His presence will be deeply missed. Godspeed, Don.
Don was a wonderful character and it was a pleasure and an honor to have learned from the great lock master!
Don was truly a loving and kind person. It has been my honor to have met him. Every week he would come into art class and share kindness and advice and ALWAYS with a big smile. He will be dearly missed by all who's lives he touched. First meeting Don, Gay and Becky when their little dog Comet escaped due to a car accident that Don got into, that adventure of helping them find Comet spurred the most loving friendships that I will value forever. I truly loved Don. My hearts and prayers will always be with Gay and Becky. Don, you are now at peace in heaven. I hope that you can now paint the most beautiful artworks and write the most inspiring poetry for all eternity.
